What exactly is an F1 Visa?

An F1 visa permits you to officially enter the United States of America as a full time academic/language student.

What can you do with an F1 visa?

  • You can legally work part-time on campus.

  • Once you get an OPT(Optional Practical Training), you can take up employment at college until your OPT is valid.

  • You can stay in the U.S until your OPT expires.

  • You can take your dependants to stay with you (your spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21).

What you need for an F1 visa

  1. You have to be a resident of a foriegn country.

  2. Once done with your course, you should intend to return to your home country. Any intention to stay back and become a permanent resident of the U.S will lead to a visa rejection.

  3. An admit from a University.

Can you work on an F1 visa?

You can officially work for up to 20 hours a week on campus if you have permission from your University to do so.

Working illegally is a serious violation of their rules and your visa could be cancelled and you could be deported back to your country.

Besides working on campus, students with an F1 visa may apply to work for 12 months off campus.

This is called an OPT (Optional Practical Training).

  1. Visa Appointment Letter
  2. Form I-20
  3. Form DS-160
  4. Passport
  5. MRV receipt (this shows that you have paid the student visa fee)
  6. SEVIS I-901 receipt
  7. Transcripts, Degree, Provisional
  8. GRE/TOEFL/IELTS test scorecards
  9. Work experience certificates, if any
  10. Financial evidance – bank statement, passbook
