SEVP stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Program. It comes under the National Security Investigations Division.
SEVP’s main job is to pass on information about non-immigrant students to the United stated government.
SEVP gives approval to schools that are authorized to enroll Foreign students.
All information about nonimmigrant students is maintained in the SEVIS.
SEVIS stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System.
It is an internet based system that maintains all info on nonimmigrant students (F and M visa), exchange visitors(J visa) and their dependants(F2, M2, J2 visa).

Before you are issued a nonimmigrant student/exchange visitor visa or if you a a dependant i.e if you require a F/M/J Visa, you are required to pay a fee.
This is called the SEVIS FEE.
This fee is required so that your information will be securely stored and maintained in the SEVIS.
In order to pay this fee, you have to fill up FORM I-901.
